The Green And Yellow TV As Performed By The Green And Yellow TV - (Records Records) A band to watch, The Green And Yellow TV offer up nine songs of psych-pop splendor on this one, and come up with more than a few winners, bub. The Green And Yellow TV really favour a "big" and grand sound, and achieve this by using a powerful drum sound (not unlike The Flaming Lips' Steve Drozd in parts) and densely layered arrangements that always keep melody at the forefront. Loud and fuzzy guitars weave in and out of the songs here, and it all makes for a wonderful overall sound. Nowhere is this more evident than on the soaring and hypnotic The Big Red Machine although the sonic assault of theng of Post-Showdown is another definitive moment for the band. Around these are tracks like the psychedelic tinged Betty, the steady rock beat of The Bouncy Knoll, and the delicate and ethereal jangle of July 7th. The CD gets interrupted a bit on the uninteresting What's The Message, but has the wonderful Coats with it's great 60's groove appearing right after it. Jellyfish fans will want to note Suspect In The Trees, where the band do Jellyfish perhaps even better than...Jellyfish ( I know - I'll be dodging bullets from Jelly-fans for daring!) A powerful set of songs from a band destined for wider attention, The Green And Yellow TV are at the start of what may very well be something big. (* * * 1/2 out of 5) Claudio Sossi March 2001 |
